Why We Care About
Disadvantaged Children in India
School dropouts and child labor are a massive problem in India, particularly in the state of Andhra Pradesh. Disadvantaged children often fend for themselves with no proper skills and limited access to medical care. In poverty-stricken areas, many children are denied their right to health, education, emotional, and social development. Government resources to combat the problem are not enough.
The longer children live in poverty, their stress levels and feelings of unhappiness, anxiety, and dependence increase. Conversely, children with adequate family support, resources, and positive role models have higher self-esteem and do better in school. Just as a parent wants the best for their child, we want to give our children the best.
We believe that all mankind has a right to seek equal opportunities
Heal was established in the UK in 1992, to help disadvantaged populations in India escape the poverty trap. As an international charity, we are registered in the UK, USA, India, Australia, and Canada with tax exemption status and run entirely by volunteers. Our goal is to help as many children as possible.
Stirring That Started It All
Five decades ago, Satya Prasad Koneru was a young medical student touched by sights of deprivation, that prompted him to organize a society for helping the poor: Praja Seva Samithi (People Service Society). The society set up a medical center for slum dwellers, book-banks and mid-day meals for poor students, and a rehabilitation center for the visually challenged and disabled. Serving the poor became his life’s mission.
The Early Years
In 1992, Dr. Prasad formed Heal and rallied others to support his work. By donating his family home, our first project was an orphanage for 26 children until we built Heal Children's Village after 5 years of experience. Children’s Village is now a home and health center for 250 children and 16 house mothers.
Our Growth
For nearly 3 decades, we have fostered children’s health and education. We built a Health Center for local laborers' children, and support 16 schools through our Escape the Poverty Trap Program that enables children to attend school with key supplies. As we learned what a strong influence a child’s home has on their development, we created Heal Paradise, a residential campus where we create a home for disadvantaged children.
With nearly 30 years of experience, we are expanding our Escape the Poverty Trap Program and growing Paradise Village as a model of a society built on the ethos of love, care, empowerment, and respect. We envision creating a replicable model in India that will grow from empowering 4,600 to 10,000 disadvantaged children each year to stand on their own in society by 2023. This growth is only possible with the support of our volunteers and generous support of donors.
