The Government Arts and Science College, Kappalur, Thirumangalam is located seven kilometres away from Thirumangalam town, on the Madurai – Tirunelveli National highway. Thirumangalam is a thriving town which is proud of its rich cultural heritage, a major industrial hub of trade and commerce, known for its bustling industrial SIPCOT. The town is notable for its significant role in the political and cultural landscape with the remarkable freedom fighter and theatre artist, S.S.Viswanatha Das. The constituent college of Madurai Kamaraj University the college was established in 11.08.2012 and started functioning from the Government Boys’ Higher Secondary School building at Thirumangalam since 21.09.2012, with 108 boys and 108 girls, 9 teaching staff and 4 administrative staff.

This college is a co-educational institution offering Four UG programmes namely, B.A.Tamil, B.A.English, B.Com and B.Sc.Mathematics. In the academic year 2016-2017, additional sections were sanctioned for B.A.Tamil, B.A.English, and B.Com. Since 2017, the college has been functioning at an independent building at Kappalur, Thirumangalam. The existing building has a ground floor with two storeys, providing 21 classrooms and two laboratories. In the year 2019, this Constituent College of Madurai Kamaraj University was converted into Government Arts and Science College, Kappalur, Thirumangalam (G.O. No 184 Higher Education Department Dated, 11.12.2020 Government of Tamilnadu), affiliated to Madurai Kamaraj University, Madurai. Since inception, the Institution has been serving as a beacon center of higher education to the different strata of society in Madurai District.
