Established in the year 1966, it started with the initiative of some prominent citizens of the town to provide an opportunity for higher studies to those who could not afford to go outside Dimapur. Dimapur College, as it was known before being taken over by the Government of Nagaland, was inaugurated on the 25th of July 1966 by Shri. M. Kithan, the then Honourable Minister of Education, Government of Nagaland. In the initial years, the College was affiliated to Gauhati University.
