The Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) in Mumbai is one of India's premier institutions for higher education in the social sciences. Established in 1936 as the Sir Dorabji Tata Graduate School of Social Work, it was later renamed in 1944 and designated as a deemed university by the University Grants Commission (UGC) in 1964 .
