Bahra University, while often referred to as being in Shimla, is actually located in Waknaghat, Solan district, Himachal Pradesh. It was established in 2011 through the Bahra University (Establishment and Regulation) Act, 2010, under the state legislature of Himachal Pradesh. Bahra University is a private university and is approved by the University Grants Commission (UGC). It is also a member of the Association of Indian Universities (AIU).
