Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda is one of the premier universities of India located in the city of Baroda in Gujarat state. It was originally formed as the Baroda College of Science in 1881 and it became a University in 1949 after the independence of the country. Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda is named after Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III, the former ruler of Baroda. It is popularly known as M.S.University (MSU). The Maharaja Sayajirao's grandson Sir Pratapsinghrao Gaekwad who founded the Maharaja Sayajirao University and settled the trust as desired by his grandfather. This Trust known as Sir Sayajirao Diamond Jubilee and Memorial Trust exists today also and caters to the educational and other needs of the people of the former state of Baroda. All courses offered by the University have English as the medium of instruction. However, the courses for specialization in Indian Languages have the the respective language as the medium of instruction. For Example, Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) with Gujarati/ Hindi/ Marathi /Sanskrit etc. is taught in the respective language. The University has international reputed faculties of Fine Arts and Performing Arts. They offer conventional degree programs in Sculpture, Painting, Applied Arts, Art History and Aesthetics, Museology, Vocal/ Instrumental Music, Bharat Natyam/ Kathak Dance, Dramatics.
